Hello my lovely friends and readers, it is of course the most wonderful time of the year and by all means, my favourite too; it’s Christmas time! Now with the holiday already on our heels, and being a music lover, I thought it fittingly appropriate to do a post with some top picks for the seasonal playlist. Whether you’re jamming in the car or dropping legs in the kitchen while the cakes and cookies are adding their festive contribution in the oven, these hits are sure to make the season brighter. And so, here are The Write Stuff’s top 20 tunes for the Christmas period with links included (and as per usual, in no particular order):

1. This Christmas (Donny Hathaway) — For a cheerful spirit and positive vibrations, I definitely recommend this hit for your playlist. It’s lively and heart-warming, certainly one to put you in a hopeful and good mood for the season.

2. Gee Whiz, it’s Christmas (Carla Thomas) — The holiday season certainly brings back many memories for most, and even old friends who wouldn’t usually cross our minds seem to find their way back to the forefront around this time of year; this song captures that relationship between old friends perfectly, it’ll make you nostalgic in a pleasant kind of way and have you cherishing those in your presence, and the time you spend with them even more.

3. Every year, every Christmas (Luther Vandross) — Looking for a little soul this season? This is it. But be advised, it is heartbreakingly beautiful and soft. A different kind of spin for the holiday season.

4. Someday at Christmas (Stevie Wonder) — A song of hope and good wishes, this one. It holds true for what the season is meant to be like, what it should bring. It’s hopeful and kind, to warm tender hearts and make them lighter.

5. Little drummer boy (Pentatonix) — There are so many versions of this it’s crazy. There’s one in particular that I really enjoy because it’s very lively and full of spirit, unfortunately though, that version has eluded me, leaving me with the inability to share it with you. Still, this rendition by Pentatonix is just as good and truly deserves a spot on your playlist.

6. Mek the Christmas ketch you in a good mood (The Joe Gibbs Allstars) — Of course, a little reggae have to be in the mix, and if there is no other, this one definitely has to be included. This hit will lift your spirits and have your body rocking to the beat so much there will be no escaping that good mood. And, certainly “pull up” worthy.

7. Under the mistletoe (Justin Bieber) — For lovers spending the holiday season together, this number is definitely one to add to the playlist. Hang that mistletoe around the house and fall in love all over again to the tunes of this one.

8. Sleigh ride (The Ronettes) — Groovy, with a funky beat, this classic will keep those feet twisting, heads bobbing and spirits high. You surely would be doing your playlist a great injustice if you leave this one off.

9. Joy to the world (Mariah Carey) — This version of the “Joy to the world” classic is one of my favourites. From the hip beat as the baseline drops, to the message it delivers for the season, this number is a must play for the holidays.

10. All I want for Christmas is you (Mariah Carey) — While we’re on the topic of Mariah, why not drop in one of the most played? And for that reason; one of popularity, I’ll put this one on the list too, because I mean, why not?

11. It’s the most wonderful time of the year (Andy Williams) — I can’t think of Christmas and not include this one. Literally everything about this hit screams Christmas— I think of my childhood and the thrill and excitement that always came with the season for us then, as kids. You really can’t help but be in a jolly good mood with this one.

12. Merry Christmas all (The Salsoul Orchestra) — By far one of my favourite tunes for the season. It brews a light and warm-hearted feeling in the spirit and that’s exactly what the season should bring.

13. Santa Claus is coming to town (Jackson 5) — There are many renditions to this classic, but my favourite has to be this one by the Jackson 5. I’m all about funk and excitement, and this one delivers on all fronts.

14. Give love on Christmas day (Jackson 5) — The season is all about sharing, giving, and love; this Jackson 5 number delivers the very message that the holiday should be all about and by no means should be left off your playlist.

15. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire (Nat King Cole) — The soft and soothing sound of this one gets me in a light mood every time. I love how tender and warm it is, it’s a good way to slow down and enjoy the moment with the family and loved ones.

16. Carol of the bells (Open) — Listen, whichever version of this classic you choose to go with, you’re absolutely right! This is a “can’t leave off”, “must include” and guaranteed to tickle every fancy.

17. Rockin’ around the Christmas tree (Brenda Lee) — Just don’t leave this one off your playlist for the season. That’s it, just don’t… It’ll never be same without this number, I assure you.

18. Winter wonderland (The Pentatonix) — The Pentatonix’s touch on this hit is for sure my pick. This one also has a spin of the classic “don’t worry, be happy” and let me tell you, it’s absolutely beautiful.

19. Jingle bell rock (Bobby Helms) — The festive season will certainly come to life with this hit. You won’t be able to stop yourself from singing along and rocking to the beat. It’ll make the holiday merry and fun.

20. O Holy Night (Mariah Carey) — Let’s not forget the real meaning behind the season now, shall we? And that’s why this one is a must; get back into the good graces and devotion as we celebrate this season, not to get lost in all the things of this world but to keep sacred the real reason for the season.
Honourable Mentions:
1. O come all ye faithful
2. Silent night
3. Rudolf the red nosed reindeer
4. Santa baby
5. Holly Jolly Christmas
6. Silver bells
7. We wish you a Merry Christmas
And that’s the list for the season’s playlist from The Write Stuff. I hope you found something joyful from this list (whether a new rendition of a favourite or a tune you may have forgotten) to add some cheer and make the season a little brighter. Until next time, my lovely friends and readers, do enjoy the season with your family and loved ones, remember to give and spread love everywhere you go, ensure the Christmas catches you in a good mood, and as always, big up yuhself! :D
